a beautiful sunset. Low clouds on the horizon have hidden dozens of sunsets in the past month or more. Tonight, the sky was filled with many clouds too, but that crucial sliver of horizon where sun meets ocean was clear.
Following some cranio-sacral therapy this afternoon, Rai was in an especially good mood and was wide awake for much of our walk along the Ocean Beach boardwalk. As we climbed the hill up to the Cliff House restaurant, his eyes were open wide and he was looking around curiously.
As we stopped midway up the hill to take in the sunset, he joined us, looking out over the water and at the golden sky. Of all the many times we've taken him to the Ocean, this was the first time he was actively involved in the process and taking it all in with those beautiful big eyes of his. True success at last: Rai has seen the Pacific Ocean!
It is on evenings and walks like this that we know Rai will have a happy childhood. A friend of ours, a mother of a 3 year old recently told us that that hardest thing about that age (2 and over) is the energy of the child. "They need to get out, to the park, every 2 hours or so..." she told Ashe. That's the hardest thing about raising a toddler?! If that's it, then we're looking forward to it and with the parks, beaches, and forests just minutes out our front door, Rai will have a childhood that he'll cherish always, and memories that will last a lifetime. Come what may, we know we can always give the gift of nature to our boy.
