Viminacium, Ram Fortress, and Silver Lake

One weekend, we took a road trip east of Belgrade, staying south of the Danube River. One of our destinations was Viminacium, one of the most notable Roman-era archaeological sites in Serbia. At 40,000 residents, this was, in the 1st century, one of the largest settlements in the Balkans and the capital of the Roman province of Moesia, modern day Serbia.

After Viminacium, we stopped by Ram Fortress. Sitting right on the bank of the Danube, in the 12th century, the original fort helped the Byzantines hold back the Hungarians. Later, during the Ottoman rule, it was initially part of the three fortresses (including Golubac and Smederevo) that protected this northern frontier of the empire. As the Ottomans moved further north, it was abandoned. 

Finally, we drove a bit further to Silver Lake, or Srebrno Jezero. I have read and heard that this is a particularly beautiful spot. Although not very impressed, we were happy to explore this spot.
