Scandinavian Road Trip - Days 12-13: The Inland Route

Tourists have come to Norway for its awe-inspiring natural landscapes for a long time. Until the road and tunnel network was developed, however, a lot of this tourism was limited to coastal cities and boat routes between them. The cities of Stavanger and Bergen are sizeable cities on the west coast that are connected by a beautiful water route via islands and fjords making this one of Norway's most historically popular travel routes. In the late 19th century, however, an Inland Route between the two was established and marketed to tourists around Europe and the world. The Inland Route was a combination of boat, carriage, and steamboat travel that took visitors through deep valleys, narrow mountain passes, and lakes with spectacular scenery. Today, the Inland Route is possible by car. We followed it northward from Stavanger, making our way towards Hardanger fjord.
