One of the most rewarding day trip destinations from Belgrade is Topola. This is town in the heart of one of Serbia's wine regions and, more importantly, the sight of the Royal Mausoleum on top of Oplenac hill, built for the Karadorde family, the family of the King that led the first Serbian revolution against the Ottoman occupation in 1804. The mausoleum is a underneath a beautiful orthodox church and its walls are covered in colorful and golden tiles and mosaics -- quite the sight. Even more fulfilling, for us, were visits to two nearby monasteries hidden, out of the way, at the end of two deep, river valleys. One in particular, of the dozens of monasteries that we have visited in Serbia so far is, our favorite!
