Studenica Monastery is one of Serbia's most important. It has historical significance as it was founded in 1190 by Stefan Nemanja, the first and most important leader of the medieval Serbian state. Today, it remains one of the wealthiest monasteries in the entire country and its remote location, 12th century architecture, and fortified setting make it a wonderful place to visit and explore. A hike up to a nearby. cliffside grotto made the visit even more memorable.
