Today
marks the end of the Muslim month of fasting and sacrifice, Ramadan. Along with the other 
important calendar dates for the three main faiths here in Singapore, this day is a national holiday and one of only four days during which the grounds and reception halls of the Istana Presidential Palace are opened to the public. We joined thousands of others in the Istana today. There's something special about wandering about a place that is normally off limits and heavily guarded. On the way back, we discovered a beautiful, historic street that leads back from Orchard Road to our place. Emerald Hill Road is lined on both sides with well-preserved colonial terrace homes. We'll definitely be taking this route down to Orchard from now on! Add to that the discovery of a good sushi restaurant which may be our Singapore replacement for the boys' favorite "big fat noodle" (ie: udon noodle) shop in San Francisco and we have the makings of a great day out! We'll try to forget the 6 or 7 hours we spent in IKEA this afternoon. That is an ordeal I hope I never have to go through again.
