The smaller but more hiker-friendly of Bali's great two volcanoes is Mt.Batur.
On this day, we left our beloved Ubud and traveled up the slopes of
this ancient volcano, passing terraced ricefields on the way and several
important and historic temples on the way. We finally made it to the
ancient volcano's rim with amazing views down into the caldera with the
new cone, the 1926 lava flow clearly visible, and the giant Lake Batur
down below. We rented a scooter from a fruit salesman in town and drove
down into the heart of the volcano for a few hours including a stop at
the lakeside natural hot springs. We needed it!
