Agenskalns

On the left bank of the Daugava River, just opposite the Old Town, Vecriga, is the neighborhood of Agenskalns. The neighborhood could not be any more different from Vecriga and the city center, clearly showing that this is a city that grew on one side of the river only. Over here in Agenskalns, the buildings are mostly of wood and, despite recent gentrification and a morphing into an up and coming area, most of this neighborhood remains in desperate need of restoration. Agenskalns Tirgus (market) is the largest on this side of the river and offers a great daily taste of life for the typical Rigan. Not far away, the more ritzy Kalnciema Kvartals (quarter) hosts a great Saturday market. Beyond the markets, Angelskalns is quiet. Very quiet. Crumbling and quiet, however, is our kind of place. The rustic charm and forgotten elegance of this district is just our style.
