Summer Holiday: Calabria

The province of Calabria, with 35% of it's population at risk of poverty, is Italy's poorest. Making up the entirety of the "toe" of Italy's boot, this mountainous province feels very distant from the prosperous north of the country. There has long been a divide between north and south and the economic reasons for this are immediately evident when passing through this region.  My route began at the Spiaggia dell'Arcomagno, a black sand, volcanic beach, south through the dilapidated but beautiful capital of Cosenza, along the coast through Pizzo and it's grotto church, to Tropea, the incredibly scenic coastal highlight of the entire province.  Lost in time Stilo was a memorable stop and the ghost town of Pentedatillo were wonderful spots to wander for several hours and another beach town, Scilla, was my final stop before making the ferry crossing over to Sicily!
