Skadarlija

 Named after the medieval Serbian town of Skadar, the Skadarlija neighborhood in Belgrade is known as the city's bohemian quarter. It began as the Gypsy Quarter in 1830 and adopted its current name in 1872. In 1901, artists and writers moved into the neighborhood when the Dardaneli Kafana (cafe) was closed down in the city center. Actors from the many local theaters called the neighborhood home, taking advantage of cheaper rents and enjoying the many kafanas opening up in the bustling neighborhood. Today, times have changed, but great effort has been put into maintaining the historic atmosphere of the area and some of the most famous, original kafanas, such as the Three Hats Kafana still stand with small bands continuing to serenade the kafana patrons.
