It's hard to say where "Old Town" begins or ends in Belgrade. This is a city that has been ravaged by war for centuries resulting in a city center that is hard to define. There is not a historic core from which rings of development radiate, as is the case in many European cities. On a single block in Belgrade, one can find a beautifully maintained baroque facade, a decaying art nouveau facade, a brutalist Yugoslav era monolith, and a modern glass tower. For this reason, the city, at first, seems uninspiring and a bit depressing. However, hours of wandering and meandering reveal many hidden secrets and gems. This is a vibrant and active city and it has really grown on us. In the old center, treasures do abound, if you are willing to seek them out. A good starting place is the embankment rising up from the Sava River to what is called the old town. This is where many of the oldest buildings can be found along quaint cobbled streets and staircases. This hill rises all the way up to Belgrade's famous pedestrian street, Kneza Mihaila.
