Historic Georgetown is the "city" on Penang Island. Living way out on the beach for our first two nights on the island, we had avoided the city altogether. However, Georgetown is not a place to be avoided. A UNESCO World Heritage city, the old quarter is an amazing place. The waterfront is dominated by grand, stately buildings, the remains of the British Empire. Further in, the maze of streets and lanes that make up the old Chinese quarter are an incredible collection of old shophouses. Strolling and exploring these streets, discovering old temples and mosques, and trying to imagine life here a century or two ago is an experience that should not be missed. It didn't take long for Georgetown to grow on us. This is a beautiful town, one which we would love to spend even more time in.
