Focused around the coastal town of Byron Bay, the hinterland of northern
New South Wales is known as the Rainbow Region. It was the remote wilds of
this state to which the hippies of the 60s and 70s fled to start a new
way of life more in line with their ethics and world view. Today, hidden
away in the valleys are more than 60 communes and lots of national park
lands -- the result of Australia's first successful logging protests.
The heart of the region, Nimbin, is home to the Hemp Embassy and the
National Hemp Party which should give one an idea of what to expect in
this region.
