over to Pyramid Lake, too. At 188 square miles, it's nearly as big as Lake Tahoe (193 square miles)! Although not surrounded by alpine peaks and huge conifer forests like Tahoe, Pyramid Lake is impressive in its own way. First, it really is a blue gem in the desert. The drive to the lake is through desert, scrub, and dry, volcanic peaks. Just as your mind grows accustomed to the browns and reds, there's Pyramid Lake, glowing blue. This is as close as we've ever come to seeing a desert mirage.
