For years, Ash and I have firmly established ourselves as "cat people". Years of students can attest to the numerous "cat vs. dog" problems that they have seen in my class where, without exception, the cat always comes out on top, as the smarter, cuter, and, ultimately, superior pet. For months now, the boys have been looking for a replacement for our poor Lenny, the hamster who went outside in his plastic ball and never came back. Ready for an upgrade, we visited Ulubele, an animal shelter outside of Riga with hundreds of animals, in search of a kitty. We asked, "show us your cutest kitten". Quickly, we were matched with the cutest kitten we've ever seen. As soon as we saw him, we knew that we'd be taking him home. At home, the name came quickly: Lauki, "countryside" in Latvian. In just two weeks, little Lauki has become part of the family. His tendency to mark his territory with feces and pee all over the house and the fact that he is growing way too quickly for a cat leaves us a bit puzzled, but maybe this is what cats do in Latvia...
