The Next Great Mathematician

In Korean, an interesting tradition takes place on a baby's first birthday. The baby is seated in front of a table of items including a rice cake, a fruit, a book, a pencil, money, and some yarn. All those gathered around wait anxiously, eager to see which item the baby reaches for first for, it is believed that the item the baby selects predicts some aspect of their future. For example, if the baby selects the pencil or book, then they may be a great scholar or leader. If the money is chosen, then the baby will be rich. The yarn? Long life. And, the food, well, they may be a big eater or a farmer.
Rai, we never gave you this chance on your first birthday but it is quite clear that you would have selected whatever the food item was. It's never too late, however, so I created a similar scenario for you at the Exploratorium yesterday. In front of you was some food, a pencil, some toys, and a calculator. The photo above shows the results clearly; just look at you eyeing that calculator. You ar are destined to be a great mathematician! Judging by your engagement in the Geometry Playground exhibit, that may be true!
