Our last island stop in Denmark was Zealand, the island most familiar to visitors as it is the island on which Copenhagen lies. We could finally feel more density and less space and knew that parking our caravan and camping for the night would be a little tougher here. Luckily, using the ioverlander website, I was able to find a great free wild camping site north of the town of Roskilde. It turned out to be such a lovely spot that we parked our caravan there for five nights, taking day trips all over the island of Zealand from this conveniently located hub. We visited the north coast, known for its beach towns, the grand Frederiksborg Castle and nearby Fredensborg Castle, and Helsingor, famous for its fortress-like palace, better-known as Elsinore, Hamlet's castle. Other spots included the wonderful Louisiana Art Museum and Roskilde itself, Denmark's ancient capital and home to a cathedral that houses the crypts of 37 Danish monarchs. What Zealand cannot offer in terms of nature and open space, it makes up for with plenty of history and culture.
