Although, generally, we have followed the Baltic Coast while moving westward toward Denmark, we did make a small detour south into Germany's Harz Mountains. Of course, any detour requires some finesse and strategic planning. To convince the boys and Ash that going 3.5 hours out of our way was "worthwhile", I had to entice them with three nights at a campsite where, although we would continue to sleep in our caravan, we would have access to bathrooms, laundry, internet and, for the boys, a trampoline and other kids to play with. As is always the case, after having to trick them into it, we could all agree in hindsight that the amazingly preserved timber-framed medieval villages in the foothills of the mountains were a highlight of our time in Germany. Camping near Goslar, we had easy access not only to this beautiful, historic mining town but also to Quedlinburg, Blankenburg, and Wernigerode. Amazing -- all of them! These are the kinds of places that genuinely make you feel like you are living centuries ago.
