Just as we had done on the way to Sri Lanka, we did on the way home. We took the long way home involving trains, planes, and long distance buses. However, it was a much easier trip home than it had been getting to Sri Lanka. We began with a 4 hour rail trip from Galle to Colombo, followed by another hour on an extremely crowded commuter train from Colombo to Katunayaka where the international airport is. Somehow, despite the sweaty body pressed against sweaty body conditions of this train ride, the boys managed to remain oblivious of the discomfort of it all by entertaining each other using nothing more than a popcorn box. After a few hours at the airport waiting for our 11:00 p.m. flight, we flew from Colombo to Kuala Lumpur, arriving at 5:00 a.m. Again, we were thankful that the boys fell asleep on the plane although Ko had entered a delirious state and rambled on about something before finally falling asleep on my lap. In Kuala Lumpur, we took the airport train to downtown and a cab to a hotel we had booked for that morning so that the we could all sleep a little. Letting the boys sleep from 7:00 a.m. to noon was a great way to mess with their sleep pattern but they needed it! While everyone slept, I wandered around central KL, surprised by just how much it has changed since our last visit here perhaps a decade ago. And, then, the best part of our journey: the bus ride from KL to Singapore. On the way to Sri Lanka, this had been a comfortable but very long trip. On the way back, it was great! We ended up on a super luxury bus, in a private compartment in the bottom of the bus where we had four, enormous seats all to ourselves, private screens and lots of movie choices, and tea and food served regularly. The 5 hour trip whizzed by and the boys were very, very happy. The thirty hour journey back home ended up being easy and comfortable. We made it!Friday, January 8, 2016
