3 Weeks in Sri Lanka - Days 16-17: Mirissa Beach

Yes, for some it may be hard to believe, but we didn't make it to the beach until our sixteenth day in Sri Lanka. This island nation lying in the warm and clear waters of the Indian Ocean is legendary for its beaches and many travellers come here only for its beaches. We're not those kinds of travellers. Wait, I'm speaking for Ash and I. Rai and Ko most certainly are those kinds of travellers. For the past week, they knew that our two nights at Mirissa Beach were approaching and they couldn't stop talking about it. In fact, they kept reminding us just how much they wished we had booked two weeks at a beach resort instead of dragging them all over the plains and hills of this country. So, the moment we made it to the town of Mirissa, they forgot everything, including the hunger they had been lamenting about for the duration of our six hour bus trip from the mountains to the coast, and ran out onto the beach. Observing their reactions at how warm the water was reminded us that, perhaps, they have never visited the ocean where the water is warm before. They know only California's ocean where the waves are fun to run around in but always chilly. Here in Mirissa, they had sun, a beautiful beach, palm trees, waves lapping, and warm water. They were in heaven. After our day and a half here, it was very, very difficult to trick them into getting onto another bus. As far as they were concerned, this was the beginning of our holiday and the flight back home had been rescheduled indefinitely. Oh, Ash and I enjoyed our time at the beach, too.
