3 Weeks in Sri Lanka - Day 19: Unawatuna Beach

Independent and adventurous travellers are always looking for the next off-the-beaten-track spot, a secret spot known to them and their friends only.  As high end resorts began to gobble up beach front property along the coast south of Colombo, backpackers and surfers kept edging their way further south, looking for a quiet cove or undiscovered beach. Unawatuna Beach was once that spot. Although it has not been overrun by resorts, it definitely no longer is that spot. This place is crowded and dozens of makeshift guesthouses and restaurants overrun every inch of space where beach meets forest. The boys needed another beach day, especially with our 30-hour journey back home coming up, so we are glad to have visited Unawatuna, but are even more glad that we had chosen Mirissa a few days before as the "beach" part of our holiday. Mirissa is the "new" Unawatuna and we dread the day when it over-develops that way Unawatuna has. Mirissa, too, is crowded but it hasn't quite been spoilt like Unawatuna has. We're not going to say that we discovered the next beach paradise, far from it. Those seeking huts and secluded beaches head to the far east of Sri Lanka. Hopefully, we'll get there next time!
