Kampong Glam
The historic heart of Malay Muslim culture is the neighborhood of Kampong Glam where the old sultan's palace stands with Singapore's most beautiful and historic mosque right next door. We've been to the
neighborhood before but, on the important Muslim holiday of Hari Raya Haji when Muslims commemorate Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, it seemed like a good time to visit the neighborhood and to explore it in more depth. We discovered that this seems to be the "alternative" neighborhood of Singapore with lots of great cafes, interesting stores, and even more interesting people. We won't call it the "Haight of Singapore" quite yet, but it does have that vibe and flavor. For the boys, the highlight was the performance at the Malay Heritage Center. For Ash, a Buddhist items shop. And, for me, a mushroom burrito. This is certainly a neighborhood that we'll be spending some time in. It was great to spend our holiday Thursday there!
