Virginia City

Back in 1859, the Comstock silver lode was discovered in what is now Virginia City. In typical boomtown fashion, the town transformed almost overnight. Within years, it had 30,000 residents and had become the richest city in America. Over the next 20 years, 400 million in silver was mined until the Comstock lode was exhausted. Meanwhile, the "Big Bonanza", an immense, almost pure gold vein, was discovered in the area and contributed to the amazing wealth of the city. The wild west, gold rush days of this former boomtown were fictitiously portrayed in the popular tv series Bonanza. These days, due to the 2 million annual visitors it receives, Virginia City continues to have a bit of a "Hollywood" feel to it. This is not the place to go to see what a gold rush ghost town looks like but it sure is fun for the family!
