Pink is for Boys, Blue is for Girls

Once in a while you hear things that turn your world upside down, times when something that you hold as universally true is shown to hardly be true at all or only sometimes true.
For example, there is the belief that the color blue is for boys and that pink is for girls. This notion is so ingrained in our culture that it almost feels that this color-gender association is intrinsic, a natural state of the world rather than the cultural construct that it really is. But, that's all it is: an idea that was created, cultivated, and propagated by a group of people until it became so common that it felt like it had always been the way.
It hasn't. Years ago, the opposite held true. Red (or pink), representing fire, blood, war was a male color and blue, a more peaceful color, was a female color. Boys would wear pink and girls would wear red. According to the friend that shared this with me the other day, in some parts of the world, the old way still holds. Rai, being the challenger of norms that you are, while hanging out with your cousin Gabby yesterday, you gave this idea a lot of thought. After checking out your blue outfit and her pink one, you thought "I can wear pink, too. Why not?" Next thing we knew, you went right for the pink hat in the store we were browsing in. Pink for boys? I'm all for it, Rai!
