Fifty percent of Latvia is forested. Wherever one turns, there is a forest. While most are wild with only unmarked trails to get lost on, some have been developed into recreational areas. One such forest is the Tervete Nature Park about ninety kilometers south of Riga. Almost fifty years ago, a woodcutter had the idea to bring to life characters from fairy tales written by the famous Latvian writer Anna Brigadere. He sculpted dozens of characters and placed them in the forest at Tervete. The number of sculptures has grown to hundreds today and walking through the forest is like witnessing fairy tales come to life. In our three hours there we were barely able to explore the forest park so we'll happily return again soon to see the rest!
