Before my first visit to Yosemite National Park, my father told me about the "tunnel view". It
may be hard to believe, but one of Yosemite's great vista points is at the end of a tunnel along Highway 41 which brings visitors into Yosemite Valley from the south end of the Park. Hearing my father's description of the journey through the dark tunnel with the light at the end being a view the length of the valley with many of the valley's main attractions in clear view filled me with eager anticipation, excitement that built until I visited this
amazing park my first time. There, as our car emerged from the darkness of the tunnel, we could see the giant granite wall that is El Capitan. On the right Bridal Veil Falls and, straight ahead, at the end of the deep, forested valley, the Half Dome. My dad would always describe it as the most amazing journey, that trip through the tunnel, because entering the tunnel, there is absolutely no hint as to how incredible the scene at the other end will be. Rai has already seen his first "tunnel view" but probably doesn't remember. Hopefully this
summer we can visit Yosemite together again. Until then, I'll tell Rai and Ko all about the "tunnel view" building their excitement like mine was by my father's description. For now, Rai can enjoy his own local version of the "tunnel view", the view through the tunnels at the museum complex in Golden Gate Park. For him, the view of the playground as the light at the end of one of the tunnels is exciting enough!
