Winter Holiday 2024 - Balkan Circuit: Northern Greece

Leaving Albania in its south, we entered Greece in its far north, a region far from the places most visitors to Greece make it to. Up here, Greece assumes more of its Balkan identity. We got just a taste of this in the Zagori region, a mountainous area where 46 traditional villages were once a thriving autonomous region within the Ottoman Empire, trading freedom and the right to self-governance for taxes to the Em;pire. Today, the centuries-old stone path and impressive arched bridges connecting the villages make this a fascinating area to explore. For us, unfortunately, a day was all we had before moving on to the beautiful island of Corfu, a place with a much different history. Part of the Republic of Venice for four centuries, Corfu retains its Venetian identity and, as a result, has an Italianate look that is very unique in Greece. The town and natural beauty of the island left a very strong impression on us and the mild weather gave us a perfect place to enjoy the New Year!
