Deep in the south western corner of Serbia, cut off from the rest of the country by Mt.Golija, is the city of Novi Pazar. Not many kilometers from the disputed border to Kosovo, Novi Pazar and the region around it has a completely different look and feel from the rest of Serbia. This area retains much more of the legacy left behind by the Ottomans than anywhere else in Serbia. Despite the mosques, bazaars, and Ottoman structures, there is an even older orthodox legacy here. The monasteries in this valley are some of the most important to the Serbian people. This is part of what makes things difficult in this region as well as into Kosovo.
