Serbia's history is one of endless battles. For centuries, Serbian orthodox monasteries had to fortify themselves as they were the last refuge for entire villages and towns, escaping wandering clans and invading armies. Manasia Monastery is one of the greatest examples of one of these fortified monasteries. The church inside looks disproportionately tiny next to the giant walls and towers encircling it.
