Just take a look at one photo and you'll see why Dubrovnik's Old Town is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". I could say that there's no place like it but, actually, there are dozens of fortified towns of the same era and style along the Adriatic coast. At one point, Dubrovnik was the capital of the Venetian trading empire, making it, perhaps, a bit larger and grander than other such cities in the Adriatic. None of this is to diminish the beauty of this city -- it is somewhere we could return to over and over again. During our European backpacking trip 20 years ago, it was one of our most memorable stops.
