Of Latvia's four regions, we spend the least time in is Zemgale which stretches to the Lithuanian border south of Riga. One day, we did as we typically do: grabbed our very detailed map of Latvia, honed in on a region and selected every nature trail, historic manor, or castle mound that we could find. That's how most of our weekends begin. Soon, we were on the road, heading for Blankenfelde Muiza. Arriving there, we found out that this beautiful old manor had recently been bought by a family from Riga, looking for a place to escape the pandemic. They are in the midst of renovating the manor buildings and grounds but gave us a tour, nevertheless. We left with with a great impression and jars of tasty quince jam. From there, we drove to nearby Tervete where we biked the trails of Tervete Nature Park. Along the way, more manors and historic village centers. A typical day in Latvia, the kind of day we can never tire of.
