3 Weeks in Sri Lanka - Day 1: Getting There
Our first true destination in Sri Lanka was the ancient Buddhist city of Anuradhapura. But, as they say, its the journey not the destination and it certainly was a journey for us to get here. It all began with an 8-hour bus trip from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. This was followed by several hours trying to make our way to KL International Airport. Then, a flight delay of 2 hours, a 4 hour flight, just 4 hours of sleep in a hotel near the airport in Colombo and 7 hours on a rickety, old train. All told, we arrived in Anuradhapura a good 40 hours after leaving our home in Singapore. This is by no means a complaint, however. Sure, we could have taken a direct flight from Singapore to Colombo with a quick change and direct flight to Anuradhapura from Colombo but then we would have missed hundreds of the small, but authentic, experiences that make travel worthwhile. My Mom taught me: life is full of little joys. Travel helps remind me of this. My senses are at their most acute when I am in the midst of adventure and exploration and in this state, everything, even the smallest things, give me immense joy. Ash and I are now excited to give the boys this same experience, passing on the lesson of enjoying every moment that my mother passed on to me.
