The shock of leaving the cabin and returning to reality back in the city was buffered by a two day
mini-vacation in Aptos with Ashe's brother, Sterling, and his family. For two days, we lived large in a classic 1980s beach house a la Miami Vice (although the house next door had even more walls made of those hollow, glass square prism bricks). The setting, overlooking the Seacliff State Beach, made for a nice spot to bring three families together for a few days even if we all secretly had our eyes on the master suite. Keeping with the "Vice" theme, Rai and Ko partook in some serious vice while there: they watched their first full-length movie. Seeing them, unmoving, eyes glazed over, mouths slightly gaping reminded us that we are glad that a television is something we do not have in our home no matter how tempting that babysitter may be.
