We'll never tire of the endless road trip opportunities in the Balkans. At this point, we know the region very well, yet, when a holiday approaches, there is always a town or two that we can set as a home base and plenty of history and beauty to explore nearby. On this holiday, we divided our week into mountains and coast. We began with the mountains north of Zagreb, a quiet, seemingly untouched part of the country. Passing through the spa town of Daruvar, with a great, hot source fountain, we settled into a small country house near Margecan. In that area, we explored castles (Veliki Tabor and Trakoscan), villages (Krapina and Marija Bistrica), and the beautiful city of Varazdin. After a few days in that region, we headed off for the second part of the week on the seaside, passing through Zadar on our way to Sibenik, one of the most beautiful old towns on the Croatian coast. The coast around Sibenik has a great trail network and nearby Primosten and Krka National Park gave us a couple great day trips. If we can holiday like this for the rest of our lives, we'll be content.
