February Break in Hungary

For our February break in 2024, we took a small road trip through western Hungary. With a hot spring, or furdo, to be found nearly anywhere in Hungary this seemed like the right kind of plan for a late winter getaway. On our way to beautiful Pecs, Hungary, we passed through Osijek, Croatia and took a stroll along the boardwalks in the nearby Kopacki Rit nature reserve. Pecs was a beautiful place to spend a few days and nearby Harkany furdo gave us our first hot spring experience. From there, we traveled north to famous Lake Balaton, one of Europe's largest, visiting some of its beautiful, historic resort towns such as Keszthely, Balatonfured, and Tihany.  The larger Veszprem is also a beautiful castle town with a long history. On our way back home, we tried to meander past some of Hungary's cities with a strong seccessionist architectural heritage such as Szekesfehervar, Kecskemet, and Szeged. Near Szeged, the town of Mako hosts one of the more architecturally stunning furdos in all of Hungary: the Hagymatikum Spa. Swimming under its wooden beams and domes was quite the experience. Back in Serbia, nearly home, we stopped in at Lake Palics for a short walk and, then, back to Belgrade.
