Following the Daugava river, inland, deeper into Latvia and towards Belarus is like taking a journey into history. Wooden forts and stone castles tell the story of the region. At Lielvarde, a rebuilt fort marks the location of a trading fort that once stood here, centuries ago and, less than 2 kilometers away, the remains of a small, stone castle. The log carvings dotting the park around the castle made the visit particularly memorable. There's an aura here that reveals the age of the place. I don't remember feeling this kind of energy since we visited some prehistoric sights in the U.K.
