The Daugava River is a major, navigable river that runs the entire length of Latvia and into Belarus. Naturally, over the centuries, it was a key trade route into the Russian Empire. As a result, the mouth of the Daugava, where it meets the Baltic Sea at the Bay of Riga was a strategically important location, one where a fort had to be built. The old star shaped fort in Daugagriva is now a crumbling relic, overgrown and nearly forgotten. It has not, however, been forgotten by a group of artists who have used its old barracks and tunnels as a setting for their nature-based art installations.
