Our week in England began in one of the world's great university towns: Oxford. Stone facades and grand colleges, it was exactly what we expected. From there, it was an hour drive into the Cotswolds, a region that, in the 19th century, was the Empire's great wool producer. Once the wool industry collapsed, the Cotswolds disappeared from prominence for decades before the elegance of its towns was rediscovered. These days, the Cotswolds are far, far from being an off-the-beaten track destination but the beauty of these villages was something we certainly didn't mind discovering, even if it was with thousands of others. Separating each village is just a few miles of rolling hills and pastures so, in one day, it was easy to pass through many villages. We drove, north to south, through Chipping Campden, Broadway, Snowshill, Blockley, Stow on the Wold, Upper Slaughter, Lower Slaughter, Bourton on the Water, Bibury and Painswick. Wow!
