We've been here for a week already. As we're te
mporarily living way out in the suburbs, we've done a
lot of exploring in the far reaches of Singapore island but haven't yet really
made it downtown. A visit to downtown Singapore was definitely overdue and starting with the ultra-sleek, ultra-
modern Marina Bay was the perfect place to start! As we watched Singapore's military aircraft fly overhead, reminding us that this year, Singapore celebrates it's 50th year of independence, we thought about just how far this tiny nation has come. For decades, Singapore enjoyed double digit economic growth and, it shows. In many ways, what this city has to offer surpasses most of the cities we've visited (and that's a lot of cities!). Last time we were here, in 2007, the entire Marina area we visited today did not exist. In just eight years, dozens of new skyscrapers went up and all the already-iconic structures we visited today were built. There's the triple towers of the Marina Bay Sands Resort, the unbelievable Gardens by the Bay with their giant Super Trees and jaw-dropping conservatories and, the boys' favorite, the Singapore Flyer, the world's largest Ferris wheel. The height and views were well worth the sky-high admission fee! We got on at the perfect time. As the sun set, we saw the sky darken and the city lights come on. Then... fireworks! A few testers were shot up, giving us enough time to rush down to the 
promenade to catch the show. The boys loved it and Ko let us know that when the Ferris wheel had reached it's highest height, he was amazed. But, the night wasn't complete yet. We've already noticed that everything in Singapore begins and ends with food. Naturally, we took a romantic stroll along the waterfront to Lau Pa Sat, the city's most historic hawker center (that's food court, in case you didn't know), for some late evening snacks. Happy Birthday, Singapore! We're glad to be here this year to celebrate with you!
