My drive down through Albania was quick but scenic and culture-filled. I began in the north in Kruje, ancient capital of the Albanians where the Ottomans were fought off by the epic national hero Skanderbeg. From there, I tried to, unsuccessfully, make a visit to Tirana. Unfortunately, that attempt was thwarted by even more epic traffic in the capital. I spent the evening in beautiful Berat, the "city of a thousand windows", beautiful an unforgettable sunrise visit to the ancient Greek site of Apollonia on the coast. From there, I drove down the coast, enjoying the Albanian Riviera, visited the stunning ancient site of Butrint, and spent one last evening and morning in the historic, mountaintop Ottoman village of Gjirokaster before crossing the border, heading into Greece.
