follows a fast-flowing creek and not much more than a mile downstream, after passing two gushing waterfalls the trail reaches the site of the historic Glen Alpine Springs Resort which is now deserted but maintained by the Forest Service. But, I think the Historical Preservation 
of Glen Alpine Springs, Inc. tell the history better than me: Nathan Gilmore discovered the Glen Alpine Springs in 1863 and built the resort in 1884. Very popular from the late 1890s through the 1930s, families came to relax in the cool mountain canyon and enjoy the "curing" properties of the spring water, the
lakes and trails. Arriving by train and steamer from Lake Tahoe, guests were driven by Stagecoach and/or Pierce Arrow and stayed in the hotel, cabins, and tent cabins. Meals were served on fine china and white linen tablecloths in the dining rooms -- as little as $3 a day for meals and lodging -- in 1905. Some existing buildings were designed by the famous architect Bernard Maybeck, who created the Palace of Fine Art for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
