Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch

Recently, we found ourselves looking at the online collection of the Smithsonian's historical photo archive. Our browsing landed us at a turn of the 19th century silver gelatin print of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. The Wild Bunch, however, wasn't quite who we expected. We could see William Todd Carver standing in the top left and Butch Cassidy himself seated in the bottom right. But, where were "The Sundance Kid" and "The Tall Texan"? Instead of those infamous men, we saw a woman with a child in her lap, a downright sinister looking man at center, and a young man with kerchief over his face standing in the back. Who were these mysterious figures? There was something vaguely familiar about them, but we couldn't quite place our fingers on it. What's history without mystery? We'll have to do some more digging to find the answers we're looking for...
