A good portion of Lithuania's tiny slice of Baltic coast is taken up by the long sand spit known as the Curonian Spit which continues southwest into Kaliningrad. Accessible only by ferry, it feels more detached from the world than a 10-minute boat trip. We were waiting for a sunny weekend before we drove all the way down here and we finally got that weekend last weekend. It was the perfect weekend in a beautiful place. The 50 km portion of the spit that is in Lithuania is 80% forest and dune with the rest being the four, small towns, the only remaining towns on the spit with all the other old fishing villages being, at some point, overtaken by the shifting dunes. Along the way, we stopped at Witch's Hill with it's collection of wooden sculptures and even picked up a hitchhiker trying to get to Kaliningrad who rode quietly with us, not saying a word. The boys loved the giant dunes near the town of Nida and all of us enjoyed our first trip in the Baltics in which we didn't sleep in the car. Staying in two hostels was quite the step up the luxury ladder for us. Great times in a great place!
