Latgale

Of Latvia's four provinces, Latgale is the most remote, isolated and, perhaps, least developed. It's in the south eastern corner of the country, tucked in between Belarus and Russia and far removed from the prosperity that Latvia experienced a century or two ago. Today, it remains overwhelmingly rural and is known for its lakes region, a land of rolling hills and more than eighty beautiful lakes. Countryside and lakes? This had a weekend trip written all over it and a stop in Latvia's second city, Daugavpils, gave us a bit of a city experience including the fantastic Mark Rothko Art Center.
