The House on Palmer Road

Ash has given the boys the wonderful gift of reading. She nurtures and guides both boys and researches and finds the very best books for both of them. More than that, she has found a way to also help the boys learn about and appreciate our current home: Singapore. Rai, especially, has fallen in love with a lot of local children's literature. One recent book that Ash has read with the boys is "The House on Palmer Road" the true story of a young girl that grew up on the Marina's Palmer Road. The Road still exists but only two historic buildings remain. What was once a small "kampong", or village, is now in the heart of the new financial district, gleaming skyscrapers all around. The house on Palmer Road is gone, its location now a bus terminal, but the two places of worship that are part of the story of the novel remain. Always interested in history and culture, we paid a visit to Palmer Road to see what remains and to let our imagination fill in the gaps.
