This weekend, events all over the city celebrated the widening array of literature available from local authors. It was hard to keep up with all the venues for the SingLit festival but we did manage to drop by a few of the events. It's great to see local talent recognized and promoted in this way! A few weeks ago, Rai and Ko dressed up as their favorite book characters for Character Day at school (Rai was Wat-son the robot from the Sherlock Sam series and Ko went as Andy from the Treehouse series). Today, Watson was one of the key characters recognized at one of the events we attended. Rai got to meet the author of a book that he is currently enjoying about life in Singapore fifty years ago (how different it was!). It's a true story of a family of ten. The book was started by a woman and finished by her daughter, years later. They were there together at the book reading. Also, Ash came across a great book collecting 30 years worth of political cartoons by a cartoonist who had to live and publish his work about Singapore from Hong Kong as his work was not allowed by the Lee Kuan Yew government. It's good to see it published, sold, and promoted here today.
