San Francisco has the bad reputation of not being a family-friendly place to live. It's no secret that
many middle-class families flee the city for surrounding towns and suburbs. We've never understood this, though. We've never had any trouble finding lots of great things to do with the boys here and, every time we go to a park or playground, we see dozens and
dozens of families out. There are tons of kids in this city and the city accommodates them very well! I thought about this as we played at the Children's Playground in Golden Gate Park today. After a couple hours there, we cycled over (the Park is closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays and holidays) to the nearby grocery for some food and snacks. Shopping at the grocery store, Whole Foods (or Whole Paycheck
as it is better known), we were reminded that fun, parks, and attractions are not the only measures of "family friendly" out there. For us, that may be enough, but many others dream of owning a home and spending less than 20% of their income on groceries. Those are the people fleeing the city for cheaper pastures. As for us, we'll rent our days away in the city, content to enjoy the public spaces that make this city heaven on earth.
