We decided to go for another historic walk yesterday. This time, we hiked into Horsethief Canyon,
another Gold Rush era trail. This steep canyon was used as an escape route by thieves who would steal the horses of Gold Rushers making their way from Carson Valley towards Hope Valley and, eventually, gold country. The thieves led stolen horses up the canyon, through a long meadow, and over a small mountain pass back into Carson Valley where they would sell them to more unsuspecting emigrants. The canyon was as steep as we'd heard but wandering in the backcountry meadow, beyond a sign that read, "End of Maintained Trail", was worth the hard work.
