With the start of another school year clearly in sight, we had just a week or a bit more to get away as a family and, just a few hours away, the mountains of Montenegro were calling us. We had explored the coast of Montenegro but the mountainous interior, particularly this tiny nation's National Parks were unknown to us. Before leaving Serbia, near the town of Prijepolje, we visited Mileseva Monastery, famous for it's painting of the white angel. Once in Montenegro, we were soon at the incredible Tara River Bridge, with its amazing views down into the Tara River Gorge. While in Durmitor National Park, we stayed in the ski town of Zabljak, a good base for the region, the Black Lake, Bobotov Kuk peak and more. From this northeast corner of Montenegro, we drove to the far south of Montenegro for the second great mountain park: Prokletije National Park. Beyond Plav, we were told by Albanian New Yorker who had returned here to retire and run a guesthouse, this area is predominantly Albanian. It looked and felt distinctly different than other parts of Montenegro. The mountains here, too, were more dramatic, more jagged. Everything felt a little more wild. We took some hikes that took us to springs and lakes that felt further from civilization than we have felt in some time. All that said, this was a perfect way to finish off the summer and enjoy some time together in some beautiful places.
