Saldus, Pokaini Forest, and Dobele
After seeing a few of his paintings at the National Art Gallery, we drove all the way to the hometown of Latvia's most famous painter, Janis Rozentals, to visit his childhood home and gallery devoted to his work. Unfortunately, the gallery is currently undergoing restoration so we weren't able to see any more paintings of Rozentals. As always, it was nice to get out of Riga and into the countryside and, on the way home, we were able to visit the forest of Pokaini, a place recognized for its mystical energy and place of spiritual pilgrimage for centuries during the pagan days of Europe's past. Not far away, and on our way home, we stopped briefly in Dobele to see the medieval castle ruins at the center of the village.
